Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of real-time Internet chat or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group (many-to-many) communication in discussion forums called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication and data transfers via private message.

To connect to the IRC server using your Web browser (Java applet) click here. A new window will open which will allow you to choose and register a nickname, as well as specify the channel you wish to join. If you specify a channel name that doesn’t exist, the channel will be created and you will be the operator.
To preserve new channels that you create be sure to use ChanServ channel services to register the channel. Follow these steps to register your channel:
- Register your nickname: /msg NickServ register password
- Identify your nickname: /msg NickServ identify password
- Join the new channel: /join #channelname
- Register the channel: /msg ChanServ register #channelname password adminemail
This server runs IRCD-Hybrid with Hybserv2 services. Currently only a couple of channels are formed, so feel free to found your own channel and invite your friends. If you create a channel and want to provide access to it as a “chat room” on your web site, you might want to take a look at the PJIRC applet as a way of doing this.
There are several free IRC clients on the Web which install as an application on your PC; you may use any one that you like. mIRC is probably the most popular, but others such as ChatZilla, Bersirc, and Trillian are free and work just fine.
